Illinois Car Insurance: Requirements and How to Compare
Illinois car insurance requires liability and uninsured motorist coverage, and the state verifies policies electronically. Here are the minimums, penalties and how to compare quotes.
Illinois car insurance minimum requirements
Illinois requires liability insurance and uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage. Illinois policies automatically include the uninsured motorist coverage. You must carry proof of insurance, on paper or electronically, while you drive.
Last checked October 2026. Laws change, so confirm current rules with the Illinois Department of Insurance or the Illinois Secretary of State.
| Coverage | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident |
| Property damage liability | $20,000 per accident |
| Uninsured motorist bodily injury | $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident |
How Illinois car insurance works
Illinois is an at-fault state. The driver who causes a crash is responsible for the damage, and liability coverage pays for it up to your limits. Illinois also uses a modified comparative fault rule, which means your recovery can be reduced, or barred, if you are mostly to blame for a crash.
Because the property damage minimum is lower than in many states, it is worth checking whether $20,000 would cover a modern vehicle if you caused a crash.
How Illinois verifies your car insurance
Illinois uses an Electronic Liability Insurance Verification program run through the Secretary of State. Insurers report coverage, and officials can check whether your vehicle is insured.
If the first verification attempt cannot confirm coverage, you may receive a notice. If you cannot show proof within the time allowed, a registration suspension letter can follow. Responding quickly avoids bigger problems.
What happens if you drive without Illinois car insurance
Driving without insurance is illegal in Illinois. State guidance lists a minimum $500 fine for operating an uninsured vehicle, a registration suspension and a $100 fee to reinstate the registration along with proof of insurance.
Repeat violations can bring longer suspensions and a requirement to file an SR-22 certificate for about three years. An SR-22 is not insurance. It is a form your insurer files with the state, and it usually raises your price. Confirm current amounts with the Secretary of State.
If you need that filing, see our high risk car insurance guide.
Is the Illinois car insurance minimum enough?
The minimum is the floor, not the goal. Medical bills, lost income and vehicle damage from a serious crash can exceed the required limits quickly, and any gap becomes your responsibility.
If you have savings or a home to protect, consider higher limits. Our guide on how much car insurance you need, our liability coverage guide and our liability coverage calculator help you choose.
Uninsured motorist coverage in Illinois
Illinois is one of a few states that require uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage. Liability policies include it at the required limits. Uninsured motorist property damage coverage is a separate, optional protection you can add.
Our uninsured motorist coverage guide explains how it works. Ask your insurer about underinsured motorist coverage and what your Illinois car insurance policy includes.
What affects the cost of Illinois car insurance
- Your ZIP code and where the car is kept.
- Your driving record and claims history.
- Your age, experience and vehicle.
- Whether you live in Chicago or a smaller town, since ZIP codes can differ widely.
- Your limits, deductibles and discounts.
Because each insurer weighs these differently, comparing Illinois car insurance quotes is the best way to find a fair price.
Driving risks that affect your Illinois coverage choices
- Winter snow and ice: slick roads raise the chance of collisions, which collision coverage addresses.
- Severe thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes: comprehensive covers weather damage.
- Heavy urban traffic: more time on crowded roads raises exposure to crashes.
- Deer on rural roads: comprehensive covers animal strikes.
Our collision vs comprehensive guide explains which coverage pays for what.
Coverage to consider beyond the Illinois minimum
- Higher liability limits.
- Collision and comprehensive coverage, especially if you finance a car. See our full coverage car insurance guide.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
- Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance.
Keeping proof of Illinois car insurance
Keep proof of insurance with you whenever you drive, and keep a copy of your declarations page at home. Ask your insurer for an ID card or a digital copy, and confirm what Illinois accepts.
If you change insurers, avoid even a one-day gap, and save the confirmation showing the new start date.
