Virginia car insurance minimums rose in 2025, and the DMV verifies policies electronically. Here are the limits, the penalties and how to compare quotes.

Virginia car insurance minimum requirements

Virginia raised its minimum limits on January 1, 2025, from 30/60/20 to 50/100/25, so older websites may show the old figures. Your insurer must be authorized to do business in Virginia.

How Virginia car insurance works

Virginia is an at-fault state, and it follows a strict rule called contributory negligence. Under that rule, a person who is even partly at fault for a crash can have their ability to recover damages from the other driver reduced or barred, depending on the circumstances.

That makes your own coverage especially important. Your liability limits protect you when you cause a crash, and your other coverages protect you when fault is disputed.

How the Virginia DMV verifies car insurance

The Virginia DMV runs a program that electronically verifies liability insurance on registered vehicles, in partnership with insurers. If the system cannot find insurance for a vehicle, the owner must provide policy information to the DMV.

Keep your policy active and make sure your insurer has the correct vehicle information. If you change companies, avoid any gap in coverage.

What happens if you drive without Virginia car insurance

Virginia treats uninsured vehicles seriously. If liability coverage on a registered vehicle ends, the owner’s driving and registration privileges can be suspended. The owner must pay a $600 non-compliance fee, file an SR-22 certificate with the DMV for three years and pay a reinstatement fee, if applicable.

Virginia used to let owners pay an uninsured motor vehicle fee instead of buying insurance. That option ended in July 2024, so registered vehicles must have coverage.

If you need an SR-22, our high risk car insurance guide explains how to shop for coverage.

Is the Virginia car insurance minimum enough?

The minimum is the floor, not the goal. Medical bills, lost income and vehicle damage from a serious crash can exceed the required limits quickly, and any gap becomes your responsibility.

If you have savings or a home to protect, consider higher limits. Our guide on how much car insurance you need, our liability coverage guide and our liability coverage calculator help you choose.

Uninsured motorist coverage in Virginia

Virginia has specific rules for uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, and the amount is tied to your liability limits. It protects you and your passengers if the other driver has no insurance or too little.

Our uninsured motorist coverage guide explains how it works. Ask your insurer exactly what your Virginia car insurance policy includes.

What affects the cost of Virginia car insurance

Because each insurer weighs these differently, comparing Virginia car insurance quotes is the best way to find a fair price.

Keeping proof of Virginia car insurance

Keep proof of insurance with you whenever you drive, and keep a copy of your declarations page at home. Ask your insurer for an ID card or a digital copy, and confirm what Virginia accepts.

If you change insurers, avoid even a one-day gap, and save the confirmation showing the new start date.
