Texas Car Insurance: Requirements and How to Compare
Texas car insurance requires liability coverage, and the state checks policies with TexasSure. Here are the minimums, the penalties and how to compare quotes.
Texas car insurance minimum requirements
Texas requires liability insurance, and the state minimum is often written 30/60/25. Insurers must also offer personal injury protection and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, which you can decline in writing.
Last checked October 2026. Laws change, so confirm current rules with the Texas Department of Insurance.
| Coverage | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | $30,000 per person / $60,000 per accident |
| Property damage liability | $25,000 per accident |
How Texas car insurance works
Texas is an at-fault state. The driver who causes a crash is responsible for the damage, and liability coverage pays for it up to your limits. Texas also uses a proportionate responsibility rule, which can reduce or bar your recovery if you are mostly to blame.
With long drives and busy highways, Texas drivers can face large claims. That is why the limits on your Texas car insurance deserve attention.
How Texas checks your car insurance with TexasSure
Insurers in Texas report policy information to TexasSure, a state database that lets officials and law enforcement confirm whether a vehicle is insured. Officers can check it during a traffic stop.
You must also provide proof of insurance when you register a vehicle. If TexasSure cannot match you to a vehicle, you may receive a verification notice, so make sure your insurer has your correct information.
What happens if you drive without Texas car insurance
Driving without insurance is a Class C misdemeanor in Texas. A first offense can bring a fine of roughly $175 to $350, and repeat offenses can bring fines of $350 to $1,000, plus possible license and registration suspension and vehicle impoundment.
If you cause an accident while uninsured, penalties are harsher. You may be required to file an SR-22, often for about two years or longer, and you can be personally responsible for the other people’s injuries and damage.
If you need an SR-22, see our high risk car insurance guide. Confirm current amounts with the state.
Is the Texas car insurance minimum enough?
The minimum is the floor, not the goal. Medical bills, lost income and vehicle damage from a serious crash can exceed the required limits quickly, and any gap becomes your responsibility.
If you have savings or a home to protect, consider higher limits. Our guide on how much car insurance you need, our liability coverage guide and our liability coverage calculator help you choose.
PIP and uninsured motorist coverage in Texas
Texas insurers must offer personal injury protection, which pays certain medical costs and lost income regardless of fault, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. You can decline each in writing, but many drivers keep them.
Our uninsured motorist coverage guide explains how it works. Ask your insurer what your Texas car insurance policy includes.
What affects the cost of Texas car insurance
- Your ZIP code and where the car is kept.
- Your driving record and claims history.
- Your age, experience and vehicle.
- Your mileage, since Texas drivers often drive long distances.
- Your limits, deductibles and discounts.
Because each insurer weighs these differently, comparing Texas car insurance quotes is the best way to find a fair price.
Driving risks that affect your Texas coverage choices
- Hail and severe storms: comprehensive covers weather damage, and hail claims are common.
- Flooding and hurricanes: storms can flood cars, and comprehensive may cover flood damage. Check your policy.
- Heavy traffic in large metro areas: more time on crowded highways raises exposure to crashes.
- Long rural drives and animals: comprehensive covers animal strikes.
Our collision vs comprehensive guide explains which coverage pays for what.
Coverage to consider beyond the Texas minimum
- Higher liability limits.
- Collision and comprehensive coverage, especially if you finance a car. See our full coverage car insurance guide.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
- Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance.
Keeping proof of Texas car insurance
Keep proof of insurance with you whenever you drive, and keep a copy of your declarations page at home. Ask your insurer for an ID card or a digital copy, and confirm what Texas accepts.
If you change insurers, avoid even a one-day gap, and save the confirmation showing the new start date.
Texas car insurance in common situations
- New or student drivers: ask about good student and driver training discounts.
- New to Texas: update your policy and registration promptly, and compare quotes.
- Drivers with violations: see our guide to high risk car insurance.
- Drivers with long commutes: report your mileage accurately.
If you are in a crash, our guide to car insurance after an accident explains what to do at the scene and how claims work. If you receive a ticket, see car insurance after a speeding ticket.
How to compare Texas car insurance quotes
- Choose your limits and deductibles first.
- Request quotes with identical coverage from at least three insurers.
- Ask each company to list the discounts applied. See our car insurance discounts guide.
- Shop again at every renewal.
Our carrier reviews and head-to-head comparisons can help you choose which companies to ask.
Texas and the states around it
Rules differ across state lines. Texas shares no borders with the states we have covered so far, but you can compare it with others in our state requirements table or read our guides to Missouri and Tennessee.
Questions to ask before you buy Texas car insurance
- Are these the same limits and deductibles I asked for from other companies?
- Which discounts are applied, and do any expire?
- Is there a fee for paying monthly?
- How does the price change at renewal?
- How are claims handled, and can I use my own repair shop?
A quick checklist
Confirm that you meet the minimums, think about higher limits, keep proof of insurance current and compare quotes at identical coverage. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners and the Insurance Information Institute explain insurance terms, and the Texas Department of Insurance can answer questions about local rules.
